Jedi Academy, revisited
I've finally gotten off my butt and started wrapping up the Jedi Academy patch. You can find it here. This is a BETA quality patch, and isn't yet final, but I'm fairly optimistic that it's final quality. If you try it, please let me know how it works for you in the comments. It's my hope that if there are no issues, we can get it finalized and released fairly quickly.
This patch should mainly be of interest to those of you who play online.
From the release notes - note my optimism that we'll release it some time in December :)
1.01c - xx December 2004
• Multiplayer app will now load .bundle DLLs from within pk3 files, provided you zip up the .bundle package, remove the .zip extension from the filename, and add "_mac" on the end. For example, cgame.bundle would be zipped, then renamed to "cgame_mac" and placed in a .pk3 file. This will allow Mac MODs to be used in "pure" server conditions, provided that the PC or Mac server contains a pk3 with the Mac DLLs.
• Fixed PC bug in multiplayer app where the client would display "Sabers only" when connecting to a server that disabled some, but not all, of the weapons.
• Dynamic glow is now a bit more dynamic than before. This may exact a bit more of a performance hit, so it can be disabled via the "More Video" options in the UI.
• Fixed potential PC bug when setting force power settings in the UI in the MP app.
• Workaround for "MAX_PATCH_PLANES" error that would occur when loading some very large 3rd party multiplayer maps.
• About box now uses the OSX default version on 10.3.0 and higher.
Edit: Scott Kevill reminded me to add GameRanger TeamVoice support, so I've updated the archive to "b2" and added that as well.
Comments
Sounds great, I'll have to try it out.
Anyway what I really wanted to comment, was that I seem to have found a way to make KOTOR playable on my low-specc'ed 1.2 GHz iBook with the Radeon 9200 Mobility card. If I run it through OpenGL Profiler and make it act as a NVidia card it apparently disables the ATI shaders which makes for a much required boost in performance. It even removes a couple of rendering bugs (btw. I'm on 10.3.6).

Has anyone tried the Dark Forces Mod for Jedi Academy - Demo?
Posted by: John Hood | December 14, 2004 07:53 AM
Yes - it works fine (and is good), but you have to download it at one of the mirrors.

Awww, did you add better copy protection? I've always used a virtual CD, I have an applescript that mounts the virtual CD with toast, then launches JKA. It's so much easier than using the CD. (By the way I do have a legal version of JKA, it's just that virtual CDs are so much more convenient). Now when I start up JKA, it asks me to insert the CD. Does this mean I'm gonna actually have to dust off my CD from its box, and actually put it in my cd drive and use it? (Oh yeah, just to see how good my Mac skillz were, I did figure out how to bypass that first Insert CD dialog, which you might want to fix cause it's easy to bypass, but when I tried to join a server in MP it said disc 1 was not in the drive)

I tried to delete the new JA MP 1.01c b2 app but two of the files in the bundle were locked:
JK2_pk3.icns
Icon_MP.icns

You da man Brad. My game works so much better now and I can finally try those big maps that everybody raves about.

All the changes seem to be working well. I've only had one problem: I've been having trouble starting a LAN game. I get the server up ok, but I can't connect to it. Maybe because I have a firewall? This has never been a problem before.

"I've only had one problem: I've been having trouble starting a LAN game. I get the server up ok, but I can't connect to it."
Try it again in the previous version with your same settings, then try the new patch immediately afterwards. If it works there and not in the new patch, let me know.

Hi Brad,
it looks like the beta patch is gone? Did you have to pull it? I'd really like to try it out.
Greetings, Andreas.

Ok, I figured out what the problem was. Your link is going to "JKJA_101c_b2.sit" but the file's real name is "JKJA_101c.sit". I guess that means that the beta phase is over, right?
Or wasn't I even supposed to download this...? ;-)=)
Greetings, Andreas.

Andreas,
Thanks for the tip! ;-)

Hmm.. I'm liking the new dynamic glow, but I'm still getting MAX_PATCH_PLANES errors on this map ( http://pcgamemods.com/3641/ ). Any ideas?

The link to download it seems to be broken...

"it looks like the beta patch is gone? Did you have to pull it? I'd really like to try it out."
I hope you didn't pull it because it's apparently required for the Forcemod III Mac version.

I went back to the previous version and was able to start up a LAN game. All I did was switch out the applications, so unless it stores some info in the app, I didn't change anything

I can't find either version available here, I tried both links, the JKJA_101C_b2 and JKJA_101C

Thanks for the URL - this is a super-large map and it looks like it really pushes it. I've changed the code to be a little more lax to accommodate this one. If you run across any other maps that give the MAX_PATCH_PLANES error, let me know ASAP.

"I went back to the previous version and was able to start up a LAN game."
I just tested it here, starting up a new game on the Mac with 1.01c and joining it on my PC with the stock 1.01 patch, and it worked fine for me. E-mail me (bradman@pobox.com) with the works "jedi academy" somewhere in the subject and we'll see if we can get to the bottom of this.

Hey Brad,
I got a copy of your 1.01c beta patch and tried to play ForceMod III on my ibook. It lets me get alot further than I have ever been able to get in the past. But when i try to start a new game it will load the map all they way up till it says loading snapshot and then the game crashes. I have tried this with any map and it always crashes on loading snapshot. Any ideas why? I also noticed it won't let me connect to any servers running Force Mod III. The screen just keeps saying awating gamestate. I hope we can get to the bottom of this I would really like to play ForceMod III with some friends of mine.
Thanks, for all your hard work. Your awesome.

"I have tried this with any map and it always crashes on loading snapshot. Any ideas why?"
Drop me an e-mail at bradman@pobox.com with the crash log entry and I'll take a look.
Posted by: Brad Oliver | January 4, 2005 03:34 PM
For what it's worth, I've seen a fair amount of crashes with ForceMod III as well--mostly in what looks like bot setup code while awaiting snapshot--however I've noticed that it will quit (not crash) if you are starting a pure server.. If you're not seeing a crash log, this is probably what's happening. Just turn off the pure server option to get around this.

hi brad;
im have a bit of trouble loading client-side mods with this new 1.01c patch. i've tried the beta2 and that final one released on macgamefiles.com. im trying to load the JA+client 1.2a, which has been updated to use the 'new bundle system' for 1.01c, but the client-side code refuses to load. the game plays fine otherwise, and the patch seems to be installed properly (about box says 1.01c, max_patch_planes errors no longer occur on the 'problem' maps, etc). but, the client-side code is not working at all. im sure i have everything installed in the right place etc.
any ideas?

the 1.01C beta2 patch seemed to work fine with ja+2.2a and plugin1.2a according to several mac users...

I am having the same trouble as Darth Zappa, the 1.01c update seems to be working fine -- e.g. I can now run Jedi Council GCX when before I couldn't because of MAX PATCH PLANES -- but now the client plugin (1.2 or 1.3 beta) is not happening. I can't do any AM stuff at all.
If anyone has any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated!

I seem to be able to load JA+, but I cannot set options such as "Controls/JA+ Control" -- I am unable to select items such as Grapple and Jetpack, they will simply not let themselves be set to a key.
I have been trying for days now to make either JA+ 2.2 or 2.3 beta to work with JA 1.01c, and I am having NO LUCK. All the possible combinations I have tried over and over -- including reinstalling. Please advise!!!!
