In under the wire
I made some pretty bold claims a few weeks back that I'd punch out a new release of MacMAME before KOTOR hit store shelves, and it looks like I made it in the nick of time, seeing as how KOTOR shipped yesterday.
I wasn't planning on cutting it quite so close to my original claim, but I forgot that I had to go out of town last week on business, which took a chunk of spare time out of my weekend. Then today, as I was just wrapping up 0.86 and packaging it for upload, MAME 0.87 was released for Win32. Luckily, it didn't necessitate any major changes on my part, so I was able to grab it and go.
I'm sure there are going to be things that are busted in this build that I haven't encountered yet. With support for over 5,000 games now (2,900 non-clones), I really don't bother to do more than a cursory test any more. My ROM collection is also woefully outdated, and I lack the motivation to hunt them all down until a bug is found.
Anyway, if this is what you've been waiting for (and my e-mail flow seems to indicate that this is the case for far too many people), then enjoy. Post any comments and bug reports on the MacMAME message board or the MacMAME Wiki - that's where they'll be seen. If you post a bug report to this blog entry, it's a sure bet that it'll get lost or forgotten when I go to do the next update. So don't do that. :-)

As said on MacMame Message board,
You've done awsome great job, thanks a lot for that, and if you need help for testing some ROMS, we'll help you.

On an unrelated note, will KOTOR run on a 1Ghz TiBook? Lately, I've been seeing Mac and PC games that don't support the Mobility versions of graphics chipsets. (The 1Ghz Tibook has an ATi Radeon 9000 Mobility with 64Mb of VRAM.) Is this the case with KOTOR? Thanks for all your hard work.

What Mac games don't support Mobility chips? I see non support in the PC side but I've never seen a Mac game claim to not support the Mobility chips (well, aside from the original Mobility Radeon, which I believe had no hardware TCL support).

The most recent Mac game I've seen this on is Myst IV: Revelations. On the preorder page of their on-line store they give the PC and Mac system requirements and both of the requirements state that the notebook graphics chipsets are either not supported or will not be fully supported depending on the chipset in your notebook.

Ah, since that's typical in PC land, and since the PC publisher is publishing the Mac version too, they're probably just being lazy. Mac notebooks are a large part of Mac sales. I'm pretty sure a publisher who has a clue about Mac gaming would test and support their games with notebooks. I highly doubt there's any technical reason why Myst wouldn't run on a Mobility 9600 if it runs on a 9600.

Well, I'm getting a 2.0Ghz Powermac soon, with the default GeForece 5200 Ultra (No build to order option in my country).
I will be sorely pissed if KOTOR doesn't absolutely FLY on this machine, even at 1024x768.
I can only hope.
