"Yugo" Revealed!

Aspyr announced Knights of the Old Republic for the Mac today - KOTOR for short. KOTOR isn't a WW2 first-person shooter powered by the Quake 3 engine, which makes for a nice change of pace. :-)

Only one person made the connection to the "Yugo" codename - AJ. Kotor is a coastal city in the former(?) Yugoslavia. Congrats AJ - send me your address and I'll fire off a copy once the game goes GM, which should be in a few months. It hit first playable about a month ago, and it's scheduled to hit alpha today. It might miss that milestone by a day or so, mainly because of issues getting sound to work right, but it's otherwise on track. We also have to factor in some slop time for the final candidate/approval process and other extracurricular activities. Breakthrough was effectively done at the end of February, but it lingered in a long licensing limbo for a few months, for example.

But back to KOTOR - it's won many game of the year awards, and it's quite an experience. If you're not familiar with it, check it out. Thus ends the pimping.

Edit: I totally forgot to mention this. I have to admit I'm surprised that it took everyone a long time to make the KOTOR-Yugo connection. I was fully expecting someone to guess a Star Wars-related game and then try and fit it in to Yugo right off the bat. But luckily, most people seemed to go down the "car" path. I'm grateful that AJ saved me from a shut-out. :-)

Congrats to AJ on this one. I've got to admit that I'm surprised and pleased that KOTOR is coming to the Mac. It really is a fantatsic game and Brad, you should pimp as much as you want on this one ;) I just worry that you may get a bit too involved in the star wars goodness of this port.
For those who don't know about KOTOR, it's IMHO the best Star Wars game to have ever been made, has in many ways more entertainment and more plot than the recent star wars films (certainly episode one) and allows immense variation of character. While it's based on the d20 system used by Bioware it's a very accesible rpg, more along the lines of a final fantasy thing than a heavy rpg, so don't discount this because your not an old skool D&D player ;) One of the big draws for many is that many decisons you make or actions you take throughout the game affect your allignment to either the dark or the light side, so you can play as a rightous jedi or move over to the dark side, or something in between. There's also some great sub-plots and mini-games. anyone up for a game pf Pazak ;)
Whoops, was just going to say props to AJ for being right on the nose and to Brad and everyone and Aspyr for bringing KOTOR over, but seem to have got carried away.

Woohoo! Now I can safely sell my XBox version. I only played an hour into it before I put it aside in hopes of a Mac version. But I also tend to play more computer games than console games so that had some to do with my lack of XBox KOTOR. Now we get MacKnights of the Old Republic. If you need me to win any more free games, just let me know ;)
