Centipede X

One of the last things I did at Westlake was work on cleaning up Centipede for modern OSX systems. As it shipped back in 2001, there was a very rough OSX version that attempted to work with 10.0.0, but eventually broke with later OSX revisions.

When I was at MacWorld, I talked with some of the folks involved with supporting Centipede, and there are some ownership/support issues that aren't yet resolved. This complicates the ability to provide an official patch, so you have to swear to me that you won't ask anyone at MacSoft, Infogrames or Atari for support, because none of them will be able to help you. :-) And similarly, since I no longer work for Westlake, the odds are slim that I'll be able to fix any issues that crop up, so it's definitely provided as-is. Still, it's better than nothing.

Without further ado, here it is.

That was a pleasant surprise! Looking forward to taking this for a spin.

Centipede OSX 1.2.1 always "unexpectedly quits" on my G4mdd1250mhz768mb (OSX.2.6), no matter what options I choose.
;-(

This works a treat, but needed a little fiddling on my machine. Dual 867, Panther 10.3.2, GeF 4mx.

-The Classic installer on the CD painted random dots on my screen instead of a legible window. It was quittable though. On a hunch I switched my screen res down to 800x600 and it worked.
- After the cutscene that introduces Wally, the front window went away, never came back. Had to quit. I used the following options the second time I ran it: 640x480, normal textures, disable fast res switching. That seemed to fix it. Later I switched res back to 1024 with no ill effects, but since I didn't view the cutscene that time it wasn't an exact test. But I suspect the fast res switching was the thing to turn off.

Fun game. I remember now, the game was okay at first but got a lot more fun at the higher levels. Thanks for bringing it back!

I buy games for my young niece for her to play, or we work the computer together. She might have fun with centipede but I'm not able to find the original so I can upgrade.

Is it still for sale somewhere?

I see Small Dog (smalldog.com) has a few copies on sale for $16. Seems a bit pricey to me, but since it isn't widely available that's hard to say. Also try eBay. I have to add that I think this game is too tricky for most youngsters to operate. Although it's brightly colored and arcade-ish, it's a console shooter at heart and gets kind of tricky. Depends on your neice and what other stuff you play together. Possibly she could do the fire button(s) and you could do the moves?

I am looking for the Alan Ruta who used to know Anita Gracin. If you are him or know how to reach him please contact me at gammagirl66@yahoo.com - it's vitally important.
