Patches aplenty

With Jedi Academy out the door, it's patching time again.

A patch for Jedi Academy (yeah, I know) is imminent, and it should be followed by patches for Alice (to fix sound issues), Jedi Knight 2 (to fix some issues I caught in Jedi Academy as well as the accursed level-loading crasher), and a patch of sorts for Galactic Battlegrounds and Clone Campaigns to fix saved-game compatibility.

You can actually fix SWGB now if you have the original CD. Just copy the "genie.dat" file from the "Data" folder on the CD to your SWGB "Data" folder on your hard drive, replacing the copy that's in there. This issue only affected people who installed Clone Campaigns - if you didn't ever install the expansion, you're already set. Of course, the downside to this patch is that if'll break saved games that you created since installing Clone Campaigns, so if that's more important than having saved-game compatibility with the PC version, then you don't want to do this.

Further down the line, there should be patches for MOHAA and Spearhead to bring them in-line with the latest core code we're using in the Jedi games. If any other MOHAA-specific bugs come up, those will hopefully be addressed too.

But what about Alpha Centauri, you ask? Fear not. If you're impatient, feel free to give the latest (and beta, I might add) build a spin. It has, for perhaps the first time ever, working internet netplay thanks to the glory of OpenPlay's decent NetSprocket layer. I don't think this build works with GameRanger though - I'll have to work with Scott to fix that.

So, by latest core code, will that include saving prefs to Application Support? What about a patch for RtCW like maybe to add Texture Compression and other of the new Q3 core code?

Do you have a Radeon card yet? If so, have you been able to replicate the JKII MP SMP crash I was having with Radeons?

I did a very preliminary pass at a Spearhead build the other day and yes, it saves user data to App Support now. It'll take a while to sort it all out for that and MOHAA, but certainly my intention is to have them support the same niceties as JK2/JKJA. When it comes to MOHAA and Spearhead, I know that we will be able to release these patches if I complete them so that's where I'm focusing my energy.

I did get a Radeon 9800, but it doesn't have an ADC jack, so I can't use it without tracking down one of those $130 DVI adapter thingies. Curse my Cinema Display! ;)

Oh yeah, I intend on trying out the new Alpha Centauri patch. Throw the movies back in, save/load, start the game with music playing in the background, lord so much to do! (These things used to either: always crash, sometime crash, or maximize volume under the old patch!)

Oh Boy! I'm happy now. Netplay too? Things can't get much better!

Thanks for the SMAC patch! It's the oldest game I have (besides Marathon) that I still play. It still doesn't fix the text drawing bug I have had since I got the game (it doesn't stop me from playing, though :)). I have tried every possible configuration (fullscreen, windowed, every resolution) on my machine (Dual 500, 32 MB Radeon, every os from 9.0.4 to 10.3.2) and all the text in the game looks like this: http://homepage.mac.com/ramius/.Pictures/smactextbug.pdf

You can use Preview to export PDFs as Jpegs. If you're worried about quality loss with Preview's default settings then you can export it as a lossless format (maybe pict) and convert to another compressed format of your choosing.

Ramius - the URL you posted doesn't work for me. Feel free to e-mail me a screenshot though - bradman@pobox.com.

Thansk.

Will be giving the SMAC build a go dreckly and thanks for the info on the SWGB patch, cheers brad :)

Erg!

Why was CD checking code put back in? I hope it is just a temporary thing. Or that something is wrong with my install. I hate CD checking! The old betas didn't have it.

This beta, though, still maximizes the volume on my machine - Quicksilver 867MHz with iSub (I guess it is a problem with the iSub), any version of Mac OS X.

Followed the link from IMG to here, so I don't know where to post this, so I'll post it here:

I hope you fix the MOH:AA multiplayer bug where I crash when opening a door while leaning.

Thanks for the beta patch for SMACx Brad. Btw, I'm still enjoying SWGB, w/ CC coming for Christmas. No word from MacSoft about the 1.29 final candidate. Any news?

How about a patch for BloodRayne for Panther?

I'd love it if the net code for mohaa got some work. I can play single player fine for hours but network play(internet) typically locks up at inconsistent intervals (slow computer may be culprit but fps can be relatively high). About the only "bug" in single player that causes crashes happens in other games, likely because of wav sound files. Hope the core changes help, jk2 demo( no money =( ) runs great except must be force quit after game shell closes. Happy Coding =).

Jedi Academy Demo in the offing?

Wow! it's really cool you're that you're putting these out, thanks. Any hope STVEF will get another patch?

Lol! Brad will hereby be known as "The Patcher"! ;)

Any chance that SMACx will be Carbonized for X? I am sick of running it in Classic.

Please, please, please...

What about Castle Wolfenstein? Is there any new patch'es coming around there? A chance for Enemy Territory maybe? :-)

another vote for enemy territory.. ;-)

You guys are asking the wrong person for ET. Activision is the folks you need to bug about it. Poor Brad can't do anything without Activision okaying ET for Mac.

What about normal LAN netplay with SMAC? I usually get sync problems within the first few minutes of playing the game, problems with starting the game, and frequent freezes. Are you aware of such problems, and are you addressing them.
In any case, thank you very, very much for working on that patch. I had given up on SMAC ever being patched.

Netplay in this version of SMAC should be fixed for pretty much all cases, with the exception of GameRanger integration (which may in fact work, but I haven't tried it).

Hrmm... I tried choosing multiplayer-IP/LAN, and nothing pops up. The menus go away like they're going to be replaced, but nothing happens. When I try PBEM/hotseat, I can't get back to the normal menus or quit, I have to force-quit.

I'll try a clean install. (FYI, if you remember, I helped you with the MP on GameRanger back when it first came out)

Thanks for the patches Brad, nice little treat for X-mas :-D

Is SMAC-Carbon working on Panther? I'll upgrade after the holidays and I absolutely don't want to loose my favorite game. Especially since I just got myself the Alien Crossfire...

Thanks again :-)

Was thrilled to find the SMAC patch for OS X. This is such a great game and I come back to it every few months. I rarely finish a game, but so much fun starting new ones!

I'm running it under 10.2.8 and also get a blank screen after clicking on multi-player IP/LAN like Jacob Griffith described. I can hit 'esc' to get back to the main menu.

I also get a crash now and then. It ALWAYS happens when an intercepter is "on alert" and automatically responds to an attack. Game immediately crashes before the automatic battle takes place. If I turn off "save at end of every turn" that sometimes fixes it?, and if I launch SMAC and choose "load game" (instead of double clicking the saved file) that sometimes fixes it... or a combination of the two?

I have several games saved just before the crash if you need an example. I've replicated the crash on two machines (G4 tower and powerbook).

Hope this helps! Looking forward to trying out Kotor.

I have also had no luck with netplay under OS X and get the same - nothing happens error explained above and esc is the only way to get back to a gui. not so much blank screen as background graphic remains - just no dialogue boxes or selection buttons on the right.

do i have to download new netplay source from apple (ADC required) to get this to work ?

me and a mate been playing on ibook and powerbook with the old classic version of alien crossfire v1.21 and crashes every 5 turns under netplay - v.frustrating.

any suggestions?
